“I am just a beekeeper…I have been keeping bees for over 49 years, starting with two hives and working up to 150 and then up to 460 after I took early retirement from Telecom.
I am now working my way down to 150 hives as one does when considering retirement and having fun with grandchildren.
I am a life member of our local hobby club, (the Wellington Beekeepers Association), life member of the branch, past secretary of the Southern North Island branch for over 25 years (now Southern North Island Beekeeping Group Inc) and a life member since 1971 of the National Beekeepers Association of New Zealand.
I was chairman of the National Beekeepers’ Publications Committee and wrote the monthly “about the apiary” column in the NZ Beekeeper which was aimed at the hobbyist and up and coming commercial beekeeper for over 23 years.
Basically, I’m a hobby beekeeper with a lot of hives.
I leave plenty of honey on the hives to winter over with which enables the bees to build to a high population to take advantage of the early flows in my area.”
